Set free…
I recall the story of a friend of mine riding his bicycle along some dusty roads of western New South Wales. A vast landscape, yet a place of peace and tranquility – particularly on a bike.
On such a journey one encounters many cattle grids. Iron bars across the road rather than gates. Ironically, these bars were like the bars of a prison for a baby kangaroo trapped underneath. Fortunately, my friend had time and patience to gently encourage the joey to freedom. And patience was required! After seemingly hours the creature was released from its bondage.
To my friend’s dismay, the very first thing it did was wriggle right back under the bars! Perhaps it felt safe there? I guess we all have choices.
Another story. Many years ago, a man named Jesus walked similar dusty roads. Only his journey was toward his own crucifixion. Why? To set people free from fear and bondage. This is the simplicity of the Easter story. It is for freedom that Jesus has set us free. At times Easter might seem overburdened with traditions, rituals, Church services, and the like. We can risk losing sight of the peace and tranquility that can be ours.
Perhaps this Easter can be an opportunity to set aside the chocolate eggs and baked dinners for a moment to consider what freedom might be like. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to reflect on what we feel keeps us “safe” and wonder if it might actually be keeping us from the beauty and wonder of beyond.
By the way, my friend persisted and eventually the kangaroo skipped away into the spectacular landscape. It is for freedom Jesus has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again in bondage to fear.
I guess we all have choices.
