Love like dynamite…
The word “power” generates much conversation these days. It might be how we power our cars. How we power our homes. Perhaps it might refer to political combatants battling for election victory. Maybe dominion over someone more vulnerable. There are numerous facets to this word. Sadly, many of the conversations generated appear to reveal power struggles in themselves. Who is right? Who is wrong? Often even deteriorating into overwhelming passion to dominate another to gain status for oneself.
Charlie Chaplin is quoted as saying, “You need power only when you want to do something harmful. Otherwise, love is enough to get everything done.”
The ancient Greek word “dunamis” was used to describe “power”. In our Bible it was used to describe a strength not unlike dynamite, or an energy not unlike a dynamo, that were neither damaging nor harmful. It was used of the power of God’s Spirit to move in the hearts and minds of humanity to overwhelm our existences with love and grace. Powerful to change the world yet not harm the world.
Our image of God is defined, or potentially tainted, by our understanding of power. Yes Mr Chaplin, love is enough to get everything done. Ironically, it’s very powerful.
