Better one handful with tranquillity…

Time is money.  We spend time.  We count time.  We save time.  We lose time.  We waste time.  We hope for more time.  The more time we have, the richer we feel.  The list can go on.  Yet, a question: “What do we spend our time on?”  Many people in our capitalist culture work hard on their financial budget.  Some also work hard on their time budget.  I recall a season when time and motion studies were all the rage, so that businesses were as productive and profitable as possible.  Time is money.

Another question: “Might we dislike wasting time so much that we forget to take time for tranquillity?”  My favourite ancient book, filled with the words of God, says we are better with one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.  I wonder what business or busyness we spend our time on?  Perhaps we quietly long for tranquillity, while we spend all our time chasing after the wind?  Toiling hard but missing the peace.  Same ancient book, different place:  Let’s not be anxious, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds.  Consider this… what value might time have in eternity?  Taking time for tranquillity is accepting a gift from our eternal God.  It’s a taste of heaven.

Tranquillity might be one of the rarest commodities in our world.  Even a handful is of immeasurable value.  Let’s not let it slip through our fingers.
