A sci-fi God…

We are all immersed in ‘story’.  We are also incredibly fascinated with story.  How do you like your stories to be told?  A book?  A movie?  Through history?  Perhaps a digital game?

It fascinates me how the stories we create, or love, often reflect our deepest longings.  There are tales of twists and turns that finish with exquisitely loving conclusions.  There are good guys and bad guys: we like it when the good guys win.  Sometimes there is uncontrollable chaos, and we delight when the scales of justice balance with a peaceful, idealised conclusion.

I rarely watch sci-fi films, yet I was intrigued with how a particular movie touched on spiritual revelation.  Set in the future, the key character was an incredibly smart self-reliant woman who was confronted with the concept of synchronisation with an AI robot.  The robot was large, strong, and equipped with powerful computerisation, apparently with knowledge of everything.  That is, except deep relationship with this lady.

The film entailed a journey of reaching complete trust.  Complete synchronisation.  Each character required to give everything to the other.  The spoiler alert?  When it happens, both reach fulfilment of who and what they were designed to be.

I wonder if this reflects our relationship with God?  What if, in the greatest story ever told, both the all-powerful and the seemingly self-sufficient person need to become completely synchronised for both to reach their fullness.  Does this reduce the majesty and holiness of God?  Or might it reveal his heart?

The delicious climax of the movie came after the computer screen stated, “Synchronisation Complete”.  Was this an easy task?  No.  Was it beautiful?  Yes.  Exactly like the end of that greatest story ever told.  Perhaps my sci-fi film is a reflection of a deep longing.  Complete synchronisation with God.

The real struggle in both stories is coming to the point of saying, “I fully trust you.”
