Words of grace…
There’s a term that’s been knocking about Church world for centuries: “benediction”. It comes from the Latin language meaning bless-speak. You might hear someone give a benediction after a church service, a wedding, or perhaps a funeral. The idea is that those listening have a blessing spoken over them. In a very real way, they are being prayed for.
Perhaps the most prolific letter writer in the Good Book loved including benedictions in his writings. He would almost always pronounce “grace and peace” over his readers. In fact, as we continue to read his letters today the same prayer and blessings are pronounced over us. I love the idea of “grace” referring to God’s empowering presence; and “peace” being the unmistakable calm amidst the chaos when we feel God’s presence. It’s a beautiful prayer.
We each have opportunity to speak blessings over those around us, even in everyday conversations. Our words have power to change and bless those we love and care for. Let’s choose our words wisely.
Grace and peace upon you.
