The Spirit of creation…
I often find myself intrigued by the animistic spirituality of indigenous Australians. An understanding that all things are spiritual. To find one’s bare feet on the land that one calls home is peaceful yet powerful. To know you are deeply connected with all of creation. Not superior. Not lesser. But deeply connected.
On a recent trip to Tasmania I found myself in awe of creation. Gracefully flowing waterfalls. Ancient towering trees in even more ancient forests. Towering peaks easing into broad, green and fertile valleys with cool rivers meandering within. No need for a zoo to encounter Tasmanian Devils, pademelons, wallabies and kangaroos. Up close and personal with wombats. And the ocean! In a smallish inflatable vessel we ventured into the remote and wild places of seals, dolphins, eagles, and humpback whales.
Perhaps the whales were the most fascinating. They came to us! And they stayed a while. Literally only a couple of metres away they rolled on to their backs for us. They raised their heads above water level for eye to eye to connection. Half an hour of fins and spouts, and then with a wave of a tail they bid us farewell.
Despite vastly different almost alien habitats creation encountered creation. Not superior. Not lesser. But deeply connected.
I believe we encountered the heart of God. From his ancient writings we learn that all creation longs for the revelation of his children and the ‘birthing’ of a time when all creation is at peace. How might this be possible? By the revelation of his Spirit that embraces it all together. Not superior. Not lesser. But deeply connected.
